The red South African grape variety Pinotage was created by crossing Pinot noir and Cinsaut and was planted in Ueken in 2006 for the first time in Europe.
Pinotage is mostly grown in South Africa. The new variety was created in the Stellenbosch area in 1925. The grape variety is considered to be particularly high-yielding and resistant to adverse conditions. The aroma of the dark red wines is reminiscent of forest berries, plums and tropical fruits. The high alcohol content usually leads to a powerful overall impression. At Fehr & Engeli, Pinotage can be tasted as a single variety - with or without barrique ageing. Together with the other strong red wine varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Merlot, Pinotage also brings the Cuvée 4 and the Cuvée 4 Barrique to perfection.
Urs Gasser, the long-standing managing director and owner of Fehr & Engeli, brought the South African grape variety to Ueken and thus to Europe. Together with a local vine nurseryman, he checked the conditions, took care of the approvals and finally planted the grape variety in the Ueken vineyard in 2006. "As we were the first to plant Pinotage in Europe, we have a comparatively large amount of experience in cultivation and vinification. The variety became our speciality and is very close to my heart," explains cellarmaster Michael Rey. "I don't know if I should say this as a future boss, but Pinotage is my favourite wine. I was thrilled from the first sip and I always have at least one bottle of Pinotage in the cellar myself. The variety is very exciting because it offers a lot of possibilities in winemaking. At the moment we are vinifying a simpler red wine in steel tanks and since 2016 also a Pinotage in barrique. These are wonderful wines every year," Rey continues.Pinotage barrel 5has already been awarded the highest mark in the "golden wine enjoyment" competition of the Aargau wine trade association.
