The large Swiss online wine platform winemaker.com is launching a completely new feature: the wineMatcher tool. Thanks to the collaboration with the Californian start-up Tastry, wine lovers can now find their favourite wines with the help of artificial intelligence (AI).
Wine lovers are familiar with this situation: trying a wine based on the recommendation of experts or acquaintances, then comes the surprise, which can be positive or negative. And once they find a wine they like, they stick with it. Trying something new is always a risk. That is why we usually avoid buying a whole case of wine online: we might not like it at all. Even the most popular scoring systems, such as Parker points or similar, are only of limited help, because they are not based on the individual palate of each wine lover.
A transatlantic cooperation now aims to solve this very problem: the Zurich-based winemaker.com and the Californian tastry.com have combined their know-how to help consumers take full control when choosing and buying wines. Tastry has developed elaborate laboratory procedures that determine the exact chemical composition of each wine analysed. With the help of artificial intelligence, more than a million criteria have been broken down into taste patterns and documented. With just a few clicks and ten simple questions, users can determine their taste preferences for red and white wines. With the help of wineMatcher by Tastry, they can assess their taste and have it "matched" with existing wines, allowing them to build a personalised wine set. After tasting the wines, their feedback allows the personalised algorithm to 'learn' and thus be able to offer even more precise suggestions in the future.
winemaker.com was launched in 2020 with the aim of bringing wine lovers together with winemakers. Today it is one of Switzerland's three largest online wine stores. winemaker.com organises wine purchases directly from the winery for its customers. The wineries are the focus of winemaker.com's work. They are carefully presented with selected pictures and stories. The aim is to create a relationship between producers and buyers. With wineMatcher, the innovative team from Kilchberg (ZH) manages to bring its customers much closer to the experience of a winery visit. With the help of innovative technology, wineMatcher provides the buyer with a level of certainty at the time of ordering that was previously only possible with a tasting in a winery or shop.
Elian Kool, co-founder of winemaker.com, explains: "Today we offer over 2 000 types of wine and new ones are added daily. With wineMatcher, we are democratising wine selection and giving our customers full control over their purchase". In a first phase, 50 Swiss red and white wines were analysed for the algorithm.
Katerina Axelsson, founder and CEO of Tastry, says: "We are proud to collaborate with winemaker.com and look forward to our European customers also having access to this advisory tool from Tastry, so they can find their perfect wines easily". She adds: "We are currently working on setting up our laboratory, which should be ready by the end of the summer this year.”
