The Klettgau owes the primeval Rhine completely different soil conditions in a small area. Until 200,000 years ago, the primeval Rhine flowed through Klettgau, to the west of Schaffhausen.
Due to the bend in the River Rhine, clay and shell limestone were deposited in Wilchingen. In Osterfingen, however, gravel was deposited. These two completely different soil conditions within a radius of only five kilometres are the trump card of the Rötiberg Winery's wine region.
The red grapes grow on the heavy clay soils of the sunny Wilchingerberg. The light gravel soils in the shadier, cooler Osterfingen are advantageous for the white wines, which require more acidity. Stephan Keller speaks of Wilchingen and Osterfingen as two different climate zones due to the marked differences in temperature. The hot zone produces rather heavy red wines, while the elegant white wines thrive in the cool zone.
