Heida - a wild rarity

Fermented almost exclusively in private cellars, Heida was once rediscovered by the Chantons, who saw great potential in it. Today, the speciality is in high demand.

The era of old vines began with Heida in 1964. Josef-Marie planted the unrecognised variety in his first leased plot in the Toppi parish vineyard. His commitment brought him the nickname "Father of the Heida". The variety is also known as Savagnin or Traminer. Heida originates from the French Jura, the name suggests a pre-Christian origin. The Heida glacier wine is the Chanton's flagship wine. The name glacier wine is derived from its proximity to the glacier. For almost 60 years, the Heida has thrived in the terraced vineyards of Visperterminen at an altitude of 700 metres and in Varen. It is a full-bodied wine reminiscent of exotic fruits. Fresh, attacking, pleasing, buttery, with a light note of pepper, quince and smoke. In 2020, Chandra Kurt - wine expert and an old acquaintance of Josef-Marie Chanton - asked the winery if a few bottles of the rarities could be sent to Germany for a tasting. The Chantons agreed and sent a few bottles. It then turned out to be the Robert Parking Institute's wine tasting for The Wine Advocate. The Chantons' wines performed very well. The 2017 Heida scored 95 points and the 2018 Heida scored 90 points plus. Eyholzer Roter and Himbertscha also scored 90 points plus. "At this tasting, there were only 3 Swiss wines that scored 95 points. We are of course very pleased that we were among them," says Josef-Marie.for The Wine AdvocateThe Chantons' wines performed very well.
