La Branne: efficiency and quality

A sulphur-free wine developed by Vincent Videau after his visits to New World countries, notably Chile and New Zealand.

Like every estate on our site, each one is full of little anecdotes that help write the story of an estate and of course, La Branne is no exception to the rule. Far from being kings in the art of marketing, Vincent Videau and his father are adepts of efficiency and this can be felt in their vines. When it comes to pruning, many estates are attracted by a pruning that is more aesthetic and visual than qualitative. This is not the case at the Château La Branne where the family prefers to prune for the quality of the sap flow rather than for the beauty of the plant. And as Vincent says, "You mustn't neglect the cellar, but it's the pruning that's the most important".

Another very interesting experiment is the creation of a "no added sulphur" cuvée, the first in their sector. This experiment is brought in by Vincent who, despite his young age, has returned home with several harvests in Chile and New Zealand, so the "no sulphur", with a natural release of CO2 during the vinification, is directly inspired by his travels. The oenologist and close family friend Antoine Médeville helps in making of this wine. The grape varieties are all blended after the harvest, first Merlot and later Cabernet. The must is aged for 8 months in one-year-old barrels and then bottled... also without sulphur! At each stage, the wine is racked under nitrogen to avoid contact with oxygen and thus sulphiting.

The result is a delicious wine, without artifice and very close to the terroir with its aromas of red and black fruits and an elegant woody flavour! Vincent confesses that it is a more difficult wine to understand, some customers love it, others a little less, there is something for everyone!
