Lukas and Sandra Baumgartner transmit a great passion for wine.

Which award for your viticulture are you really proud of?

Lukas: That we were awarded a gold medal at the "Chardonnay du Monde" in 2005 with our new wine from the Chürzi site at the first attempt. To win such a medal in France with one of the first vintages is really a great success.
Sandra (laughs): Since then the Chardonnay Chürzi is almost always sold out until this award ceremony!
Lukas:
It is also wonderful that we received 3 gold and 1 silver award at the "Grand Prix du Vin Suisse" in 2018. We submitted 6 wines and were awarded four times.

Lukas Baumgartner

Lukas Baumgartner completed an apprenticeship as a winemaker from 1983 to 1986. From 1988 to 1991 he attended the viticultural college in Changins near Nyon. He also completed several further training courses in sales, as an expert for the Swiss Hail Insurance Company and in wine sensor technology. Baumgartner also took final examinations in viticulture for 20 years. In 2002 he took over his father's winery together with his wife Sandra. In 2017 the elder son Noel joined the family business. Michel, the younger son, will follow after his studies and experience abroad.

Which of your wines is particularly close to your heart?

Sandra: All, of course.
Luke (laughs):
Pinot, the king of red wines - a diva. A variety that strongly shows the location and the signature of the winemaker. The worldwide reference variety of the top winemakers. Through pressing and maturation, it enables a wide range of varieties. Certainly, I also enjoy other varieties, but all in all, our Pinot Noir is the most passionate.
Sandra:
Yes, that is where our greatest expertise lies, but of course we are also interested in numerous other varieties - our extensive range is proof of this.

Do you also offer "wine experiences" - such as "Wine+Dine", site tastings, verical wine tasting, overnight stays in wineries, etc.?

Sandra: We have our "vine godparents-event". For 20 years our vine sponsorships have been an unique gift idea. We launched this idea in 2000 to cushion the costs of a new planting. What was intended as a one-off event has now become a major project. We offer vine sponsorships in 4 vineyards with 5 different grape varieties. The sponsorship lasts 5 years. Once a year we invite our gods and goddesses to our winery and present us, our wines and the winemaking profession from the best side. On this occasion the godparents collect their liquid assets. Many nice encounters and friendships have been made.
Lukas:
Currently our sponsoring family consists of about 1000 sponsors with 1350 vines. Last year our winery was bursting at the seams, that's how big the crowd was.

What hobbies and interests do you have besides wine?

Sandra: Oh, I have 1000 interests, but time is short. I like biking, walking and hiking. I also like to read, especially news and newspapers, but also one or other books.
Lukas:
I am regularly on the road with my racing bike, but also together with my wife from time to time. In our holidays we often go hiking and usually get to know other wine regions, winegrowers and wines.

Noel Baumgartner

Following work placements in New Zealand and Alsace, Noel has been working in the company since October 2017. While working, he continued his training in Wädenswil to become a viticultural technician HF.
In his free time, Noel enjoys sports, fishing and making chairs, tables and decorative objects from our used barrique barrels.

Can you still separate work from hobby?

Sandra: We don't have to. We run our winery with passion. Degustation excursions during the holidays are mainly for further education and inspiration.
Lukas:
Holidays often leave their mark on our range. In 1992 we were enthusiastic about port wine in Portugal . Since then our São Luca has been in our assortment. In 2016 we travelled Porto and Lisbon again with our children. After port wine tastings, our sons were also fascinated by the making of these liqueur wines. Since then all three of us have been producing a wine liqueur in the Port wine manner.
Sandra (laughs):
In response, my daughter and I created the "Halbstarch", a partially fermented "women's wine". A feminine seduction even for strong men.

What is your winemaking training?

Lukas: After completing my three-year apprenticeship as a winemaker, I studied oenology at the University of Applied Sciences in Changins/Nyon. Our son Noel is a trained carpenter and vintner. After completing a year abroad with work placements in New Zealand and Alsace, he started an extra-occupational training as a viticultural technician at the Wädenswil Wine Centre. He successfully completed this in July 2020. Our son Michel completed a 3-year apprenticeship as a winegrower and then the vocational school-leaving certificate bilingually in Bienne. In September 2020 he will start his studies for Bachelor of Science in Vitculture et Oenologie also at the University of Applied Sciences in Changins.
Sandra (proud):
In 2018, he became Swiss champion in the winemaker category at the Professional Championship "Swiss Skills". Our daughter Danielle is a graduate of the Hotel Management School Lucerne. The subject of wine is also omnipresent in her profession and has a high value in her life. She often supports us at events and in marketing.

How did you come to viticulture?

Luke: Through the family. I went to the vineyard at a very young age to help. I have also done my homework in the vineyard and later I helped with the vines.
Sandra: A tradition that has been passed on to our boys! They also went to the vineyard with their father, early and many times.

What profession would I have if it were not winemaking?

Lukas: That was never an issue for me. I attended the district school (highest level in Aargau). The fact that I subsequently began an apprenticeship and did not aim for the Matura was rather incomprehensible to the teachers. I did it anyway and never regretted it.

The solidarity of the people who helped us was impressive. 20 people fought for us all through the freezing cold night.

What makes you happy in life or at work?

Lukas: To produce beautiful wines that please customers and to accept compliments from time to time. Such feedback makes me even happier than selling the wine. These are the real display units. I also like working outdoors, in all seasons and in all weather.

Which wine growing experience will you never forget?

Sandra: The 2017 frost control in the Chürzi vineyard was special. 2 frosty nights with considerable temperatures below zero were announced. Because of the special lground inversion position, it regularly gets even 1-2 degrees colder on the Chürzi site. So we had to fire the vines. But the cold front affected large parts of Europe, so the frost candles were sold out everywhere. At that time we were afraid of an imminent complete failure of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
Lukas:
We piled up wood chips in the vineyard and kept them burning with Bunsen burners. (Laughs) Almost everyone involved got a smoke poisoning afterwards. The smoke created a blanket over the vineyard, so that the heat stayed longer with the grapes. It was perhaps only a drop on the hot stone. All the other vines we couldn't heat could still have broken down.
Sandra:
The solidarity of the people who helped us was impressive. 20 people fought for us all through the freezing cold night.
Lukas:
Nature spent miracles and therefore the failures were manageable. No full yield, but our action prevented the worst.

Organisieren gehört zu ihren Stärken, trotzdem sucht sie oft Schlüssel und Handy. Der Freitagmorgen ist seit vielen Jahren für den Laufträff Achenberg reserviert und dementsprechend «heilig».

What do all employees and helpers of the winery do together?

Sandra: When harvest is finished we invite to a get together. All employees and harvest helpers take part.
Lukas: At the get together we look back, I tell them something about the harvest and compare it with that of previous years.
Sandra: With the permanent employees we usually have an annual dinner or we make the one or other excursion.

When I listen to music in the wine cellar, then it is...

Lukas: I don't listen to music in the wine cellar! But I used to play tuba in the music society.
